Engine Management Light On? What to Do First

The colour of the light tells you how urgent it is.

  • Red light: stop as soon as it’s safe and switch off. Red usually means oil pressure, engine temperature, brakes or charging. Don’t keep driving.
  • Amber light: the car has logged a fault. It’s normally safe to drive carefully, but get it checked soon.
  • Flashing engine light: usually an engine misfire. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it looked at straight away, as it can damage the catalytic converter.

Why Is My Engine Management Light On?

The engine light comes on when the engine computer sees a reading outside its normal range. Some of the most common causes we see are:

  • A faulty oxygen (lambda) sensor
  • Worn spark plugs or ignition coils causing a misfire
  • A blocked or failing DPF on diesel cars
  • A sticking EGR valve
  • A failed mass airflow sensor
  • A loose fuel cap or a small vacuum leak

Can I Turn Off or Reset the Warning Light Myself?

You can clear the light with a cheap code reader, but if the fault is still there the light will come back, often within a few miles. Clearing it also wipes useful information that helps find the problem. And with the light on, most modern cars will fail their MOT.

We read the stored codes and live data, test the part the codes point to, and then clear the light once the fault is fixed. That way it stays off.

FAQs

Common questions

If it’s amber and steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive carefully to a garage. If it’s flashing, or the car is losing power, running roughly or overheating, stop and get it checked before going further.

On most modern cars, yes. A lit engine management light is an MOT failure, as are ABS and airbag warning lights.

Because the fault that caused it is still there. Resetting only clears the stored code. Once the actual fault is repaired, the light should stay off.
