Temperature Gauge in the Red? What to Do

If your car starts to overheat, pull over as soon as it’s safe and switch the engine off.

  • Don’t open the coolant cap while the engine is hot. The system is under pressure and can scald you.
  • Let it cool for at least 30 minutes, then check the coolant level.
  • If the level is low, top it up and get it checked as soon as you can. If it overheats again, don’t keep driving it.

Driving an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket, which costs far more to fix than the original fault.

Why Is My Car Overheating?

  • Low coolant because of a leak from a hose, the radiator or the water pump
  • A thermostat stuck shut
  • A water pump that has failed
  • A radiator blocked inside or clogged outside
  • A cooling fan that isn’t switching on
  • Air trapped in the system after a top-up
  • A failing head gasket

Coolant Leaks

A sweet smell, a puddle of green, pink or blue fluid under the car, or a coolant warning light all point to a leak. We pressure test the cooling system to find exactly where it’s coming from, so you only pay to fix the part that’s actually leaking.

Radiator, Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement

We replace radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses and cooling fans on all makes and models, then refill with the correct coolant and bleed the system. On many engines the water pump is driven by the cambelt, so it often makes sense to replace both together. See our cambelt replacement page for more.

Common questions

It’s best not to. Pull over, let it cool and check the coolant. Driving on with the gauge in the red can cause serious engine damage.

In an emergency, yes, to get you home or to us. But coolant protects against freezing and corrosion, so the system should be refilled with the correct coolant once it’s fixed.

White smoke from the exhaust, coolant disappearing with no visible leak, a milky residue under the oil cap, or bubbles in the coolant tank. We can test for it.

It depends on the car and how easy the part is to reach. We’ll find the fault and give you a price before starting.
