Best Cambelt Replacement Garage in Liverpool
One of the biggest jobs you’ll ever have done on your car is a cambelt change. Many people don’t know what the belt does or why it needs changing, or that it should only be done by a competent and confident mechanic.
What Does the Cambelt Do?
It’s an important part of your engine. We won’t go into how combustion works, but here’s what the cambelt is for. Inside your engine is a part called a camshaft, which opens and closes the valves so fuel and air can get in and burnt gases can get out to your exhaust. This has to be timed perfectly to stop the pistons hitting the valves.
That timing comes from the crankshaft at the bottom of the engine, where the turning starts. The cam and crank have to stay in perfect sync, otherwise the pistons and valves can collide, which is very bad news for your engine. The cambelt is what keeps them in sync.
What Happens if it Snaps?
A cambelt is made from a synthetic rubber material and wears over time from running around your engine and the heat it’s exposed to. That’s why they’re known to snap when they aren’t changed at the right intervals. If one does snap, you’ll almost always need a lot of engine work, or even a new engine.
How Often Should I Change My Cambelt?
This is one of the questions we’re asked most at Childwall Garage, and the answer really does depend on your car, its age and what the manufacturer recommends. Many modern cars need their belt changing at around 100,000 miles, but some recommend it as low as 40,000 and others as high as 160,000. If you’re ever unsure, give us a call and we’ll talk you through the recommendation for your car.
How Much Should a Cambelt Replacement Cost?
Again, it depends on the car. Every engine is built slightly differently. Some have two camshafts (you may have heard of double overhead cam), and some manufacturers have the cambelt drive other parts such as the water pump or oil pump, or both. All of this needs to be considered when we put a price together.
Labour on a cambelt change can range from 3 hours to 10 hours or more. Including parts, you should expect a minimum of around £350 for the job. If the water pump, oil pump, coolant and oil also need changing, the price can go up considerably.
Who is the Best Garage to Change My Cambelt?
As the cambelt is such a vital part of your engine, it’s important to choose a mechanic who is not only competent but confident in their work. Even the smallest error in fitting can leave a car needing a new engine, so we’d always recommend trained technicians with plenty of time to do the job properly and a wealth of experience.
We’re based at the Childwall Fiveways roundabout, just behind the old NatWest bank. Give us a call on 0151 737 1520 and the team will get you a price and book you in as soon as possible. If you’re not sure when your cambelt was last changed, call us straight away, before you risk it snapping and ruining your engine.
