MOT Garage Liverpool

An MOT is something all cars need once they’re three years old, so it’s important to have a good MOT garage. If you live or work in Liverpool, you’ll want a garage that specialises in MOTs.

A good garage isn’t just an old one; it’s one that is fair and honest, not only with its regular work but with everything it does. There’s nothing worse than walking into a garage when you’ve been told your car is ready, not knowing how much you’re going to pay. You want the confidence that the bill is right and fair for the job. That’s where we come in at Childwall Fiveways Auto Centre. Here are just some of the reasons to trust us with your car.

Best Garage in Liverpool

It’s not all about blowing our own trumpet. After all, what good is saying how good we are without the proof to back it up? Here’s a quick snippet from one happy customer who returns to us year after year.

★★★★★

I’m a very happy customer with the service they offer. The price is very good, they do find another way to keep the price down which helps the customer rather than the company. Overall outstanding service and I will be back for future work.

What is an MOT Test?

We’ve mentioned that all cars need one, but what actually is the test and why is it law?

MOT stands for Ministry of Transport. It’s a yearly test set by the DVSA to check that your car is safe to be on the road. The aim is to pick up wear and tear that could make your vehicle a danger to you or other road users. MOT testers need separate qualifications to carry out the test, so they know exactly what to check, what’s allowed and what will cause a vehicle to fail.

What is Tested?

To decide whether your car passes or fails its MOT, a large number of items are tested. Here’s a brief look at some of them and why they matter.

Brakes

Both your brake discs and pads are checked for wear, then your car goes on a rolling road to test how efficiently it brakes. Most modern cars need a braking efficiency of at least 58% to pass. The brakes are also tested for balance, and if there’s more than a 30% difference in braking effort between the two sides of the car, it will fail. Good brakes protect other road users as well as you and your passengers.

Tyres

Tyres are another big part of the test. They’re checked for tread depth, size and condition. The legal minimum tread depth for cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, and you can’t have different sized tyres on the same axle. Bulges, cuts or cracking in the tyre wall are also reasons to fail.

Windscreen Wipers

Your wipers are tested for how well they clear the screen and for any defects. Only the front wipers are examined, as a rear wiper isn’t compulsory on cars in the UK. Whether the screen is cleared well enough is down to the tester’s judgement, but if your wipers don’t clear it properly, your car will fail, so it’s worth changing worn blades before your test.

Where Can I Find More Info on MOT Testing?

GOV.UK has a full guide to the MOT, covering what’s checked, what happens if your car fails and how to check your vehicle’s MOT history. You can find it on the GOV.UK MOT page.
