When Does My Car Need an Oil Change?

Most cars need fresh oil every 6,000 to 12,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Your handbook or service indicator will give the exact interval for your car.

Old oil breaks down and collects dirt, so it stops protecting the engine properly. If you do a lot of short journeys, tow, or sit in Liverpool traffic most days, it’s worth changing it at the lower end of that range.

Oil Light On or Oil Level Low?

A red oil light means low oil pressure. Pull over when it’s safe, switch the engine off and don’t keep driving, as it can cause serious engine damage. An amber oil light or a low reading on the dipstick usually means the level needs topping up. If you’re having to top up often, the car may be leaking or burning oil, and we can find out which.

Oil Change or Full Service?

An oil change is a good in-between job, but it doesn’t replace a full service. A service also covers air, fuel and pollen filters, brakes, suspension and a full set of checks. If your car is due one, see our manufacturer service page, or call us on 0151 737 1520 and we’ll tell you what your car needs.

Common questions

Usually every 6,000 to 12,000 miles or every year. Some cars with long-life oil go further, so check your handbook or ask us.

It depends on the engine. We look up the correct grade and specification for your car from the registration, so you get the right oil, not just the nearest bottle.

No. Under UK rules you can have your car maintained by an independent garage during the warranty period, as long as the right parts and fluids are used. We use oil and filters that meet your manufacturer’s specification.

Usually under an hour. You’re welcome to wait, or drop the car off and we’ll call you when it’s ready.
