Car Won’t Start and Just Clicks?

A single click, or a rapid clicking, when you turn the key or press the start button usually means the starter motor isn’t getting enough power or has failed.

A weak battery causes the same symptoms, so we always test the battery and the wiring first. There’s no point fitting a new starter motor if the real problem is a corroded cable or a flat battery.

Signs of a Failing Starter Motor

  • A single click and the engine doesn’t turn over
  • The car starts some days and not others
  • A grinding or whirring noise when starting
  • The dashboard lights come on but the engine won’t crank
  • Smoke or a burning smell after trying to start

Starter Motor Replacement

Once we’ve confirmed the starter motor is at fault we’ll give you a price for a replacement unit and fit it, then check the battery and charging system so you’re not caught out again.

If your car won’t start at all, call us on 0151 737 1520 and we’ll talk you through the options for getting it to us.

FAQs

Common questions

Usually a flat or weak battery, a poor connection at the battery or starter, or a failing starter motor. We test each one so you only pay for what’s needed.

If the lights and radio are dim or the engine turns slowly, it’s more likely the battery. If everything is bright but you only get a click, the starter motor is the more likely cause.

Often, depending on parts availability for your car. Call us with your registration and we’ll check.
