Knocking Noise When Going Over Bumps?

A knock, clunk or rattle over speed bumps is the most common sign of worn suspension, and it’s usually one of a handful of parts.

Drop links, anti-roll bar bushes, shock absorber top mounts and ball joints all wear with time, and Liverpool’s potholes don’t help. Because the wear creeps up slowly, a lot of drivers only notice when the noise gets loud or the car fails its MOT. We’ll put the car on the ramp, find exactly what’s worn and give you a price before we do anything.

Car Pulling to One Side or Steering Feeling Wrong?

If the car pulls left or right, the steering wheel isn’t straight, or the steering feels loose, heavy or vague, the cause could be a worn track rod end, a ball joint, a sticking brake or the wheel alignment being out. We check all of it rather than guessing.

  • Knocking or clunking over bumps
  • Pulling to one side
  • Loose, heavy or vague steering
  • Tyres wearing on one edge
  • The car bouncing or wallowing after a bump
  • One corner sitting lower than the others

Suspension & Steering Parts We Replace

  • Shock absorbers
  • Coil springs (a broken spring is a common MOT failure)
  • Drop links and anti-roll bar bushes
  • Wishbones, bushes and ball joints
  • Track rod ends and steering racks
  • Wheel bearings

After suspension or steering work we’ll check your wheel alignment, as new parts can knock the tracking out. You can read more on our tyres and tracking page.

Is It Safe to Drive?

Worn suspension makes the car harder to control, can add to your braking distance and is checked on every MOT. It also wears tyres out faster, so a small repair now can save you a new set of tyres later.

If something doesn’t feel right, call us on 0151 737 1520 or use the booking form below and we’ll take a look.

FAQs

Common questions

Most often a worn drop link, anti-roll bar bush, ball joint or shock absorber top mount. Less often it’s a broken coil spring or a worn shock absorber. We’ll inspect the car on the ramp and show you what we find.

It’s not recommended. A broken spring can damage the tyre or other suspension parts, and it’s an MOT failure. Get it booked in as soon as you can.

Usually, yes. Replacing steering or suspension parts can change the alignment, so we’ll check it and adjust it if needed.

It depends on the part and the car. A drop link is a small job, a pair of shock absorbers is more. We’ll always give you a price before starting work.
